In Russia, a group of outdoor enthusiasts cut a large piece of floe ice on the Don River near the city of Voronezh, used it as a bamboo raft, drifted nearly 9 kilometers along the river in 6 hours, and had a picnic on the floe. Their companions recorded their adventures on video.
In the video, they found a spot of ice and used tools such as a chain saw to cut out a large ice floe about 10 centimeters thick and 10 meters long. They all stood on the ice and let the ice carry them along the river. They also made barbecues on the ice floes, played selfies and popped champagne to celebrate their success. In this way, their floating ice journey lasted nearly six hours and covered about 9.6 kilometers, before they all boarded the shore on inflatable rafts.
One of the members said the experience was fun, but it was all done with careful planning and safety measures. To cut through the ice, they brought tools such as ice picks, ice axes, and saws. For safety reasons, they also brought two inflatable rafts, and each had a life jacket and change of clothes.
To keep warm, they also prepared hot tea. Fearing they would fall into the water, several members practiced swimming in the icy water. Members of the group said their venture was also intended to encourage people to get outdoors more.
