Why are outdoor barbecues popular?

Barbecue has become part of American culture. It can be used not only as a leisure activity but also as a social activity. 85% of American households and 75% of households have a barbecue.  About 60 percent of grill owners go out grilling year-round (69 percent of gas grill owners) every week in July and August.  The late spring and early summer (March to May) is the peak season for oven sales, while the third quarter is the slow season. In the fourth quarter, sales will increase again due to Christmas shopping gifts. 


Among them, natural gas furnace only accounts for a very small market share and the change is small (7% in 1985, 9% in 2002). Electric oven is more used in recent years, but the market growth is slow (4% in 1995, 7% in 2002).  According to the statistics of the American Oven Association, from 1985 to 2002, gas oven because of less pollution and easy to clean is gradually replacing carbon furnace to become the main force of the market, the ownership of gas furnace increased from 46% to 61%, and the overall downward trend of carbon furnace, from 65% to 48%.

The price of the burners The simplest burners typically cost between $50 and $100, while the more versatile ones cost $400 or more.  The most common gas grills typically cost between $129 and $299 (80 percent cost under $300).  Adjustable models range from $700 to $1,500, to $5,000 to $10,000 for all-stainless steel models.  The cheapest ovens, which cost around $150, are low-powered and suitable for couples or couples.  High-power stainless steel costs $1,800 to $2,500. 

Three out of four U.S. households own their own grill. 48% of those who own a grill use a carbon burner, 61% use a butane gas burner, 9% use a natural gas burner, 7% use an outdoor grill, and one in seven (15%) has an indoor grill.  About half (48%) have only one gas stove, three in ten (29%) have only one carbon burner and nearly one in five (18%) have both. 

While men do the grilling most of the time (66 per cent), women are more likely to decide when and what to cook.  Fifty-eight percent of the grills are in use during the year.  The fourth week of July is the most popular time for grilling, with around three-quarters of us (76 per cent) having a barbecue, followed by Anniversaries (58 per cent) and Labour's Day (51 per cent).  Hamburgers, steaks, hot dogs and chicken wings are the most common barbecue foods.  The most commonly used wood for adding a smoky flavor is shrub, walnut, fruit such as apple and cherry.  Food clips and forks are the most commonly used grilling utensils, alongside trays of aluminum flakes and skewers. 

Grills are mostly purchased through discount stores.  There are about 2223 specialty retailers of grills in the United States and Canada.  Plus retail in tens of thousands of malls across the country.
